Delicate handling and hard-to-reach spaces
Delicate produce and food handling is one of the clearest real-world applications, soft grippers are actively researched and deployed for picking fruits, vegetables, and packaged food items that would bruise or break under a rigid gripper's fixed contact points. The same conform-and-distribute-pressure behavior that helps a soft gripper handle an egg without cracking it applies directly to sorting and packing lines where product shapes vary and damage is costly.
Search-and-rescue robotics is another active application area, where the ability to compress and reshape through unstable, irregular gaps in rubble or debris matters more than raw strength or speed. Rigid robots often can't fit through the small, unpredictable voids found in a collapsed structure, while a soft or partially soft robot body can deform to navigate them, an capability that's led to soft and hybrid designs being explored specifically for disaster response scenarios.
