Tooling, infrastructure, and security services
Given how capital-intensive and competitive the biggest protocol and DeFi plays have become, it's fair to ask where a small team or an individual builder can actually find real opportunity today, and the answer is not by trying to out-fund a major protocol. The clearest opportunity is building tooling and infrastructure for other builders: developer tools, testing and simulation frameworks, monitoring and analytics for on-chain activity, or better developer documentation and SDKs for existing protocols. As more teams build on top of existing chains and protocols, the demand for solid tooling around that work grows steadily, and unlike competing directly for end users, tooling businesses can serve the entire ecosystem of builders rather than needing to win any single, crowded consumer market.
Security and auditing services are a second, closely related opportunity, and one of the strongest given the scarcity discussed earlier in this course. A small team or even an individual with genuine, demonstrated security expertise can build a real, sustainable practice auditing contracts for other teams, precisely because demand consistently outpaces the supply of people who can do this well. This work doesn't require the capital of launching a protocol yourself, it requires deep expertise and a track record, which is exactly the kind of asset an individual or small team can build without needing outside funding first.
