When a mistake can't be undone

Some remote tasks tolerate a clumsy touch. Others don't. Handling explosive ordnance, manipulating fragile samples in orbit, or working inside a human body all share a common trait: a small error in applied force can cause serious, sometimes irreversible, damage. In these settings, force feedback isn't a convenience, it's what lets an operator distinguish between a surface that's merely touched and one that's being pressed too hard, before the damage is done.

This is also why teleoperation, rather than full autonomy, still dominates in these domains. Fully autonomous manipulation requires a robot to correctly interpret every contact situation in advance, which remains hard in unstructured or unfamiliar environments. A human operator with good force feedback can apply judgment and caution that's difficult to encode as a fixed set of rules, especially the first time a robot encounters a given object or situation.
