A disaster-response test, not a race
The DARPA Robotics Challenge asked teams to build robots, mostly humanoid, capable of doing what a human emergency responder might have to do in a damaged industrial site: drive a utility vehicle, walk across rubble, open a door, turn a valve, use a power tool, and climb stairs, all in a single course meant to resemble a disaster site too dangerous for people to enter safely. Robots were scored on how many of these tasks they completed and how quickly, but completion mattered far more than speed, since the whole point was proving a robot could reliably operate in an unstructured, human-built environment rather than a controlled lab.
The tasks looked simple for a person and were extremely hard for a robot. Turning a door handle requires fine manipulation and balance at the same time, and climbing a ladder or stairs demands whole-body coordination that most robots of that era simply didn't have. Several robots in the competition fell over attempting these tasks, and those falls, captured on video and widely shared, became a visible, sometimes humbling reminder of how much harder real-world robotics is than it looks.
