Representing a protocol out in the world
Beyond writing and community work, DevRel often includes representing a protocol at conferences and meetups, which can mean giving a technical talk, running a workshop, or simply staffing a booth and having one-on-one conversations with developers. Good technical talks in this context tend to focus on concrete, practical content, like how to solve a specific integration problem, rather than broad promotional messaging, because a developer audience is quick to tune out a talk that feels like a sales pitch.
Events are also a two-way channel, not just an outbound one. A DevRel person at a conference is often gathering feedback as much as delivering it, listening to what developers find confusing or frustrating about the protocol and bringing that feedback back to the engineering team in a structured way. That feedback loop, external voices reaching internal engineering decisions, is one of the most concrete ways DevRel actually shapes a protocol's roadmap and priorities.
