Depth, presence, and situational awareness

Before XR headsets were practical, remote robot operation typically meant watching a flat video feed on a monitor, a view that strips away depth cues and makes it hard to judge exactly how far a gripper is from an object. A stereoscopic VR headset restores binocular depth perception by showing each eye a slightly different image, much like natural vision, so an operator can judge distances and spatial relationships far more accurately.

Head tracking adds another layer of natural awareness: turning your head to look around a cluttered workspace is instinctive, while panning a camera with a joystick or mouse is not. Together, depth perception and head-driven look-around give an operator a level of situational awareness inside a remote robot's environment that a 2D screen feed simply cannot match.
